MSU Space Cowboys Need Your Help!

The Space Cowboys at MSU are an internationally competitive, high-powered rocketry team that designs, builds, and launches at the world's largest collegiate rocketry competition. This year’s rocket, Helios, will compete in the 30k COTS Solid category at the 2025 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC). Helios will feature many exciting technologies, like a brand-new airbrake system that will precisely control the apogee target for our rocket. This technology and many more will elevate us to the next level and allow us to be highly competitive in our respective category.

The Space Cowboys are also manufacturing and testing a new Student-Researched and Developed (SRAD) hybrid engine for future competitions. This engine burns nitrous oxide as the oxidizer and paraffin wax as the fuel. It will burn for about 10 seconds and produce around 1,000 pounds of thrust.

Why Your Support Matters

By funding the airbrake system, donors will make this year’s rocket, Helios, much more competitive by allowing it to stop at exactly our intended altitude—a key competition requirement. Money to support our team also feeds our ongoing hybrid engine development program, enabling our students to gain valuable experience with more complex propulsion systems, and eventually allowing us to compete in a separate, even more challenging category at our yearly competitions. With your gift, we will work hard to ensure that your contribution elevates the Space Cowboys as a team and the world’s future engineers.
