Frequently Asked Questions
Gift FAQ
What is crowdfunding?
The practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small gifts from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.
What kinds of projects can be submitted?
MSU projects or ventures which seek funding for academic-related activities are eligible to use Bulldog Boost. The money raised cannot benefit one specific person, rather it needs to benefit a team initiative, university program, or academic area on campus. The project or venture must have a fund opened through the MSU Foundation. All funds raised will go into this fund, used from there or transferred to another university account.
How do I give to a crowdfunding project?
1. Select the campaign you want to support
2. Click the Contribute button on the page
3. Choose on the amount you want to give
4. Fill in the needed information
5. Submit gift by clicking the “donate” button
Are my gifts tax deductible?
Yes, and you will receive a gift receipt for tax purposes from the Mississippi State University Foundation.
When will my credit card be charged if I make a contribution?
Your card will be charged immediately upon completing your contribution.
Is my gift eligible for employer/corporate matching?
Yes. However, it can take several months for employers’ matching funds to reach the MSU Foundation. In the event the match does not arrive before the project deadline, it will be applied to the fund for future use.
What is the Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as Federal Tax Identification Number?
The Tax ID for the Mississippi State University Foundation is 64-0410581.
Can I make a gift by mail or phone?
The MSU Foundation is able to take gifts over the phone, in the mail and online, but to have your gift be reflected in the campaign total, gifts must be made online via Bulldog Boost.
What if a project goal is not reached?
Projects will receive all funding made to the project even if the goal is not achieved. In the event a project cannot be undertaken because of the shortfall, the money raised will be retained by the sponsoring (school/college department, program or center) for use on a project with similar goals.
What if a project goal is exceeded?
All projects will receive all funding made to the project even if the goal is exceeded. The more money raised, the greater the impact.
Project Sponsor FAQ
How can I apply to host a project?
Click on the application tab on the top of the page.
How are contact lists built for crowdfunding projects?
Project owners are required to solicit their own personal networks for crowdfunding campaigns because the success of crowdfunding comes from personal connections and contacts. The MSU Foundation does not provide email list for crowdfunding purposes.
How long should I plan on preparing a campaign?
We recommend crowdfunding teams set aside 30-45 days to plan and prepare prior to a campaign launch. A good rule of thumb is to apply 90 days before you need your funding in your account. This gives a team time to apply, be approved, plan and implement their campaigns.
What does it take to have a successful campaign?
To have a successful campaign, you need a compelling story that clearly illustrates your need. A creative communication plan which reaches beyond MSU alumni and willingness to invest time and effort into planning for, launching, and fundraising your campaign.
What if I'm interested in using a 3rd party site to crowdfund?
MSU Foundation crowdfunding does not allow for 3rd party site crowdfunding.
Are all projects approved?
We expect most will be. There is a process for approval, but if you’ve considered all of the points outlined above, you have a good chance of approval.
